Musicwood Chassis

In our gallery section some of the pictorial descriptions use the term Musicwood. This is our term for a uniquely designed and constructed amplifier chassis that uses many principles found in string instruments, such as violins, cellos, guitars, etc. The structural nature of the instrument is such that the resonances are tuned to achieve the best tone. Two and a half years of development has resulted in the current Musicwood structure. The chassis feature a component support (bottom) grid (which also optimizes ventilation), and a carcass structure that features tuning blocks on each panel. The grid is the dynamic support structure for the internal components and the heart of the energy transfer system coupling to the optional base or support feet. The amplifier chassis and suport grid are constructed of quartersawn Sitka spruce. This wood is commonly used as soundboards on fine string instruments, because of its superb tonal characteristics. It is also an extraordinary wood in terms of strength to weight and its structural capabilities are legendary in both architecture and aviation. Carefully placed tuning blocks and braces are used for strength and resonace tuning. Optional bases offer the best method of coupling the amplifier to the floor. This minimal but elegant base functions as a coupling cradle while simultaneously elevating the amplifier enough to optimize the convection cooling necessary for the OTL to perform its best. Our standard optional base is either Maple or Sitka Spruce, and can be finished as natural wood (tung oil and wax) or painted to compliment the amplifiers color.

The final step in the Musicwood chassis is the careful application of automotive paint. The chassis is prepped and primed inside and out (to control the woods natural movement) and then sprayed with the highest grades of automotive paint. The layers of paint add surface tension to the carcass enhancing the structural stiffness of the chassis. A couple of beautiful examples can be found in the gallery section. Audi Desert Green (Pearl Effect) as found on the Audi TT Roadster/Coupe is on the CES 2002 VZN-100's. Audi Brilliant black (Pearl Effect) has also proved to be stunning. Also in the gallery section is a pair of VZN-100's magnificently turned out in Piano Black. Whether opting for simple beautiful black or making a color statement, a Musicwood Joule is an expression of physical beauty and musical veracity.

Our experience has proven that the tuned resonances of the Musicwood chassis provide significantly greater tonal depth and vastly improved ambiance recovery without ANY loss of speed or blurring. Information retrieval is considerably enhanced in a way that is as effortless and beguiling as it is unmistakable. Musicwood chassis amplifiers perform more like an instrument presenting the heart and intent of the musical performance. A jewel of a Joule.
